Poster, British Railways (Southern Region), 'Visit Windsor Castle', by Reginald Montague Lander. View of Windsor Castle from the Thames, Text - To stand beneath the towering battlements and tread the same worn stones that once rang to the steel-shod feet of men-at-arms is to experience fascination of stepping back across the centuries, Although originally built by William the Conquerer to guard the approaches to London, the massive stone fortifications were largely constructed during the 12th & 13th centuries. Since those early days successive monarchs have enlarged and restored the castle. In 1348 Edward III founded the Order of the Garter, with its own chapel, which was replaced by St George's Chapel in 1475 and stands today as one of the finest examples of late Gothic building. The choir is magnificent with the Knights' elaborately carved stalls surmounted by their colourful hereldic banners. There is so much of interest to see here, from a fine collection of paintings, arms and armour to Queen Mary's Dolls House, a luxurious 20th century royal residence complete in every detail but just one twelfth normal size. This royal fortress, a proud symbol of our national heritage is but a few minutes walk from the station., Information on availability of posters for sale, 1978, (Other IDs AD1000/B31/2/12178 Code C).
